The main difference
304 and 316L are both austenitic stainless steels, but 316L includes molybdenum. That chemistry helps improve resistance to chloride exposure and pitting corrosion.
When 304 is often enough
304 is widely used for kitchen equipment, indoor panels, cabinets, tanks, appliance parts and general fabrication. It is usually the practical choice when the environment is mild and cost control matters.
When 316L is preferred
316L is commonly selected for coastal environments, salt spray exposure, cleaning chemicals, food processing, sanitary equipment and chemical handling. It is also useful where welded assemblies need lower carbon content.
How to request a comparison
When asking a supplier to compare 304 and 316L, provide the application environment, cleaning method, expected service life, fabrication process and budget target. The right choice depends on use conditions, not only grade name.
